Trauma, grief, and even stress create not only emotional pain, but can create very real physical pain. While psychotherapy alone is a successful tool in treatment, it is common to only focus on the cognitive symptoms and behavioral changes when sifting through healing interventions. This often leaves our physical body overlooked, leading to a continued disconnect between mind, body, and spirit. Yoga, by its very definition, unites. Infusing the practice of trauma informed yoga supports the union of the whole person.
What can you expect?
Similar to traditional psychotherapy, the relationship between client and therapist should be built upon trust and mutual respect. Before arriving for your first session, you will be provided with a 15 to 20 min free consultation. This is not only an opportunity for you to share why you are seeking therapy but also an opportunity for you to interview me. If you feel comfortable moving forward, we will schedule our first 50-minute session. The first few sessions will focus on rapport building and collecting information concerning both mental health and physical health and then we will work collaborative on a plan of treatment that best suits your needs.
What would a plan of treatment look like?
The idea behind Yoga Infused Psychotherapy is an intricate weaving of traditional talk therapy with trauma informed yogic practices, including but not limited to, mantras, breath work, gentle yoga postures, and mindfulness practice. As I am a firm believer that there is not a “One Size Fits All” approach to therapy and your plan will be uniquely you. Therapy must remain a collaborative approach so it will remain a top priority for me to make sure you feel safe and supported (mentally and physically) through whichever sequence of practices we choose to apply in our sessions.
Do I need yoga experience?
No prior knowledge or experience with yoga required! Part of the intake process is assessing your unique needs. The sessions will be tailored to you and every breath, posture, and/or meditation will focus on your internal experience in a safe and non-judgmental environment. There is no "right way" in my office. You are the expert on your body; I am merely a guide. As a trauma informed practice and to allow for optimal body autonomy I will not be making any adjustments or using physical touch during our sessions.
Do I need to b?
There is not a set limit or number of sessions to complete for optimal healing. Every person is unique and deserves to feel comfortable working at a pace that is safe and effective for them. For some clients, their target problem requires only a few months, while other may continue therapy for a few years. It is important to remember that positive change does not happen overnight so allowing yourself the grace to be flexible and trusting the process is key.
What are the effects of Yoga Infused Psychotherapy?
The ultimate goal of Yoga Infused Psychotherapy is to reconnect your body, your mind, and your spirit. We lose connection to our full self when we experience disruptions in our lives related to overwhelming experiences like trauma, grief, and stress. Using techniques like mindfulness allow us to refocus on the present and escape the negative thoughts that can take over our day to day. With the addition of yoga postures you have an opportunity to reclaim your body by building trust, learning to listen to its needs, and allowing yourself to release and begin to heal.
While I cannot guarantee 100% satisfaction to all, I can guarantee that I will always work with you and in your best interest as we navigate through the therapeutic process. This includes a mutual understanding that if there is a chance that we as therapist and client are not a good fit, that I will work with you to provide resources and referrals to find the support that you need.
